Research · October 2026
The top 50 by an ELO rating derived from evidence alone. 272 candidates found, 224 researched, 3273 dated evidence items collected. Click any name to see the arithmetic behind the score: how many points each dimension contributed and what was missing.
Dot — the rating. Line — the 90% interval across 300 bootstrap re-runs, each of which adds noise inversely proportional to that person’s evidence quality. A long line means we know less about this person, not that the person is weaker. Click a name to open their card.

No reachable source confirmed that these people hold the role recorded for them. Their rating is computed honestly, but it scores the record rather than the person: a low position here means “could not be verified”, not “weak specialist”. Some may be strong practitioners in affiliate and iGaming, where staying private is the professional norm.

Three cuts across the whole sample. Hover any dot for the exact numbers; the same figures open as a table under each chart. The first two charts are built on the 209 confirmed records, the third on all 224.
Median raw score, 0–100, on each of the nine dimensions: the orange dot is the rest of the list, the blue dot the first fifty. The surprise is at the bottom — having results barely separates the top from the rest (+13). What separates them is AI search (+36), then momentum and peer recognition at +31 each. Research carries the lowest absolute median on the whole market: 19 out of 100 outside the top fifty. That is not a shortage of thinking — it is a shortage of published method. The small grey figure beside each label is that dimension’s weight in the rating.
| Dimension | Top 50 | The rest (159) | Gap | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI search | 66 | 30 | +36 | 15% |
| Momentum | 73 | 42 | +31 | 5% |
| Peer recognition | 58 | 27 | +31 | 5% |
| Commercial | 60 | 31 | +29 | 7.5% |
| Influence | 59 | 31 | +28 | 10% |
| Research | 46 | 19 | +27 | 15% |
| Innovation | 52 | 26 | +26 | 12.5% |
| Technical | 52 | 35 | +17 | 10% |
| Results | 62 | 49 | +13 | 20% |
Dot — the discipline’s median ELO; line — from its lowest to its highest member; the small figure beside the label is how many people it holds. The reading that matters: in-house is one of the largest groups and has the lowest median. Its strongest member reaches 1695, so this is not about skill — in-house results sit under NDA, and a rating built on public evidence can only see what was published. Read the bottom of this chart as a measure of visibility, not of ability. Rows set in lighter type hold fewer than eight people and are too small to compare.

One dot per person: evidence quality across the bottom, ELO up the side, all 224 researched records. The dashed line is the least-squares fit; the correlation is r = 0.78. This is the method’s most honest limitation, so it gets a chart of its own: the rating rewards people whose work can be verified. Somebody excellent and quiet lands low and to the left — not because the method judged them weak, but because it could not see them. The cloud is still wide: at the same evidence quality the spread reaches several hundred points, so being documented is not the whole story.

Sixteen independent passes searched from different angles: agencies, conference speakers, tool builders, the diaspora, AI search, research, education, technical SEO, e-commerce and in-house, affiliate, trade media and awards, and separately the people the market under-represents. The passes could not see one another. Together they produced 564 records, which reduced to 272 people.
Transliteration is this market's main trap: one person easily splits into Oleh and Oleg, Mykola and Nikolai, Kseniia and Ksenia. Names were normalised, merged by fuzzy match and checked by hand. The 182 candidates found by only one pass were screened separately: 90 promoted, 58 held, 34 rejected including 5 duplicates. The 58 held were later researched in full as well.
A separate researcher per person: 6–15 dated items, each with a URL the researcher actually opened, a claim type and a confidence level. “Top 10 SEO specialists” listicles counted at most once and only as opinion. An award published by the person's own employer is not evidence for them. A talk proves the talk happened, not that its content was original.
Contested candidates went to a panel of three judges with different lenses: did this person do search work themselves; did they change how the field works even without running campaigns; and a prosecutor whose job was to prove they do not belong. Removal required two votes of three. Tooling, education and research are in-scope disciplines in their own right; owning a company that sells SEO is not the same as being an SEO specialist.
Every one of the 224 records was checked by a separate agent, and exactly one passed clean: 920 corrections, including invented transliterated names and several invented absences, where a researcher checked the wrong URL path and recorded “no publications”. Where a correction changed the evidence base, the scores were recomputed — in both directions.
Three people received deep anchor dossiers, which every researcher then scored — 714 independent ratings of the same three people. The mean inter-rater spread was 3.87 points per dimension. Each rater's severity was measured as the median deviation from consensus, and half of it was removed from that rater's scores.

Evidence quality works as a confidence modifier, not a tenth score. Standing above the median has to be earned with evidence, so thinly evidenced strengths are pulled toward the middle. Nothing below the median is pushed down further — there, only the uncertainty band widens.

No match result is invented: everything derives from the normalised evidence. Spearman between the base and final rating is 0.9996, so the ELO stage adds robustness rather than new information. 14993 pairs were played.
